Burns Breakfast - Free Event

This just in...An invitation to a Burns Breakfast.

The Burns Breakfast is scheduled for Jan 26th at 12:00 AM (in order to give folks a chance to recover from the Burns supper the night before). Attire is: pajamas, slippers, and bedhead with puffy eyes and sunglasses to ease the pain of your hang-overs  ;)

On that note, we might provide a hang-over tonic of some sort.

Entrance is free.

The point of this event is to actually read Burns together (don't worry, I'll help translate), to understand his cultural mentality, and to heed his messages. Since Burns wrote satire about people with money who thought themselves above the poor working class, this event is free and open to all.

We will have "gruel" (oatmeal) and "baiyeld eeegs" (boiled eggs) and tea for breakfast, because that's what most real Scots like Burns (and like my mother) ate for breakfast when they were lucky. We'll dress ours up with a few toppings though (like cinnamon, nuts, fruit etc) just for health reasons, fun and because we're able to.

In addition to reading R. Burns, we'll listen to the music of Dick Gaughan, a contemporary Scottish musician who sings both traditional songs of coal miners and his own original songs (ex: workers unions fighting Thatcher). I think that Robbie would have liked Dick, and combining them will provide a temporal continuity that will help Scottish-Americans to understand contemporary Scottish politics, like the Scottish Nationalists' attempt to gain independence, which was driven as much by economics as by pride.

Donations are welcome to cover the cost of the food, but all Burns enthusiasts will be fed regardless of whether they are able to donate.

Participants are encouraged to bring and/or read their favorite Burns poem, or an excerpt from it. Also, please bring your favorite Scottish music, live or recorded, to share if you think it fits the spirit or the theme of your chosen poem (on any subject he wrote about, not just class conflict).

Children are welcome, and there is plenty of grass and jungle gym equipment to play on within sight of the community room. It's a clean, safe and pretty place with trees.

Parking is allowed anywhere in the complex that is not covered by a carport.

This event is a work in progress, so please feel free to join me in co-creating it.

Tartan Day

Location and time to be determined.  Last year (in 2019) the event was  held at the Lost Coast Brewery in Eureka.

It was a lot of fun and one dollar for every pint was donated to the 2019 Redwood Highland Games.
